SUMMER STORM UPDATE - JUNE 11, 12:30 P.M.

June 11, 2020

GAHANNA, Ohio, June 11, 2020 - More than 3,000 line, contractor and support personnel are working to restore power after a fast-moving, strong storm with winds higher than 60 m.p.h. crossed the state. Central Ohio and the northeast section of AEP Ohio’s service territory, including New Philadelphia, Steubenville and Canton, were hardest hit with the trees and spans of wire down and numerous broken poles. In sections of southeastern Ohio, aerial patrols are being used to assess damage in difficult to reach terrain.

93,193 customers were out of power as a result of the storm. Crews have restored 57,038 customers. At 12:30 p.m., 36,155 customers remain without power.

Power outages and downed lines can be reported on the AEP Ohio mobile app and AEPOhio.com.

SAFETY INFO

Please be aware of potential hazards:

Downed power lines

Severe weather can cause power lines to snap or poles to come down. Fallen power lines are dangerous because they carry electric current that can cause serious or fatal injury. Never touch a fallen wire, no matter how harmless it looks. And keep others away from the potential hazard as well. If you encounter fallen wires, stay away from them and immediately contact AEP Ohio.

Life support/health concerns

In the event of a major power outage, life-support customers are encouraged to contact AEP Ohio's toll-free customer operations number to advise our representatives of their situation. Due to the nature of restoration activity, AEP Ohio cannot assure priority restoration for life-support customers. Life-support customers are advised to take precautionary measures to protect themselves in the event of a power loss. Contact relatives or friends for assistance or temporary accommodations in the event of a prolonged outage. Keep emergency phone numbers (physicians, hospitals, safety services, utilities) posted near your telephone.

Portable generators

If you use a portable or RV generator, do not plug the generator into your circuit box. Portable generators "backfeed" electricity up the line and risk the lives of repair workers and the public. Follow the manufacturers' instructions carefully, and plug essential appliances directly into the generator.

Damaged service entrance

AEP Ohio cannot connect power to any home or business where there is damage to the service entrance. The service entrance is the area located 1) at the meter, 2) between the meter and the home's electrical panel, or 3) the location where the cable connects to the home/business owner's cable. Customers need to have a qualified electrician repair this damage before power can be restored to the home or business.

STAY INFORMED

  • Customers are encouraged to use the AEP Ohio app to monitor the status of outages.
  • See the location and status of outages using our outage map at AEPOhio.com/OutageMap
