Earn Rewards for Saving Energy

You only pay for the electricity you use, so energy efficient choices can lower your bill. Now, AEP Ohio offers new ways to earn while saving energy.

With Power Rewards: Smart Thermostat, you get paid for reducing usage during peak demand. Just enroll with a smart thermostat. Don’t have one? Buy one through our Smart Thermostat Marketplace and get instant savings.

Here's how the Power Rewards program works

On days when electricity demand is at its highest, or when distribution equipment is constrained, AEP Ohio may initiate an energy conservation event. Immediately before an event, your home may be pre-cooled in the summer or pre-heated in the winter by a few degrees. Depending on how well it is insulated, your home should remain comfortable. While the event is underway, a signal will be sent to your smart thermostat to temporarily adjust your temperature set point by no more than 3 degrees. Your home will not instantly become warmer or colder. In fact, you may not notice any temperature change at all. At the end of the event, your thermostat returns to its target temperature and your original schedule.

Important details to keep in mind:

  • AEP Ohio may call up to sixteen (16) energy conservation events each year.
  • Energy conservation events will last four hours or less.
  • You always maintain control of your thermostat and can override AEP Ohio’s adjustments at any time.
  • These events are optional; by participating, you can help reduce statewide power consumption and electricity load to ensure a stable energy supply.
